Reverse osmosis is an established process to purify or desalinate contaminated water by forcing water to pass through a membrane.
Water produced by reverse osmosis can be used for different purposes such as desalination, the concentration of contaminants, reclamation of dissolved minerals, and wastewater treatment. Reverse osmosis plants require a variety of pre-treatment techniques including softening, de-chlorination as well as anti-scale treatment.
Following pre-treatment, high levels of pressure send water through a semi-permeable membrane, which retains all contaminants but simultaneously allows pure water to pass through the membrane.
